Fred Collins has lived in Berkley for almost three decades.

He is a life-long resident of Oakland County -- absent only during the years he was serving his country in the Marine Corps (stationed in North Carolina and Okinawa, Japan) He joined the Corps immediately after graduation from Royal Oak Kimball High School in 1976.

He has four sons, all of whom attended Berkley public schools. Two of his sons are now partners in Frederick Collins Construction & Repairs.

Fred has spent his entire adult life involved with his community — as a Boy Scouts leader, member of the Dad's Club, the Berkley Jaycees, Friends of the Library, and the Berkley Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Berkley City Council for eight years (1997-2005), worked as a park clean-up volunteer,and participated in the Yard Clean-up for Seniors Program and the Dream Cruise Committee. He currently serves on the Berkley Tree Board, the Berkley Christmas Parade Committee, and the Berkley Environmental Advisory Board. Fred and his team were responsible for restoring the antique sleigh that brings Santa Claus to Berkley every year as part of the annual holiday parade.

Fred and his wife Barbara’s current project is a complete renovation of their own home in Berkley, on the corner of Wakefield and Wiltshire. In 2003, they purchased the former "O'Dell House." Originally built in 1922, the home had fallen into disrepair after years as a two-family rental. Working in their spare time, Fred and Barbara have rebuilt and restored the venerable structure, doubling its size, and are now in the process of completely restoring the interior. When finished, "this old house" will have been transformed from a neighborhood eyesore into a city showplace.
